DVD FIEND: THE BURROWERS (2008)

Written and Directed by J.T. Petty, The Burrowers is an interesting little trip into the weird side of the wild west. The movie is set in the late 1800's and does well as a period piece. I felt the movie started off with a bang and then became awkwardly slow. It eventually found its footing again and kept an even pace till the end--which was not a happy one. Despite some pacing issues early on, the story itself is strong and one worth watching. The cast dos a competent job, but I had a hard time "rooting" for any of them till the very end. The Burrowers themselves are creepy, and spend most of the time in the shadows, leaving a lot to the imagination early on. I very much liked the design of the creatures and found how they "prepare" their food to be disturbingly awesome--definitely the darkest element of the story, and one that could've been played up more.

All in all I think The Burrowers is a decent movie, a good weird western, and something worth giving a shot. If you're looking for Tremors meets The Unforgiven, you won't find it here, but you'll find a good, almost original story.
