DVD FIEND: (500) DAYS OF SUMMER

While you may think this is a romantic comedy, it's more of a dealing with a heart-breaking break-up type of comedy. Yeah, "yawn" you may say, but this indie flick is done in way that is unconventional and original, and is altogether pretty darn good. The story unfolds within the span of the 500 days that Joseph Gordon Levitt's character meets, goes out with, breaks-up, and gets over Zooey Deschanel's Summer. If I just gave away the whole story, forgive me, but this movie isn't about its over-arching story, but rather its individual parts, and how it is brilliantly constructed. Each scene, or "day", is chosen at random from those 500 days, and none are in any order. It's a pretty cool way to put together a movie, and peek inside this doomed, but sorta sweet relationship.

Not only is this aspect unique, but the characters of Summer and Tom are fleshed out very well, and you can't help but get involved with them. I'm sure at some point in your lives you've experienced both of these point of views, and can relate. It's this relation that makes for a strong connection with the viewer. And Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel's chemistry plays off each other at just the right points, and then makes like a magnet touching another magnet when it is necessary. Kudos to them. Levitt received a Golden Globe nomination for this performance, so there you go.

Overall, this is quite an interesting movie. I really dug everything about it, and look forward to Marc Webb's next movie, which actually might be the Spider-man reboot. So queue this one up if you haven't.
