FEATURE FIEND: ROBIN HOOD

I have to admit that I've enjoyed most of the films which I've seen that Ridley Scott has directed and Robin Hood is no exception. While this is not a traditional take on the familiar legend, previously made popular by the likes of Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner, it's definitely worthy of entry into the Robin hood film cannon. This is the story of a Crusader who returns to England, comes to terms with his origins and fends of a French invasion all before becoming a famed outlaw.

Russell Crowe stars in the title role, combining the "historical" figures of Robin Longstride and Robert of Loxley all into one larger than life figure. Crowe is a good enough actor to make the role completely believable. He's joined on screen by Cate Blanchett in the role of Marion Loxley, Max Von Sydow as Sir Walter Loxley, and Mark Strong as the villainous Sir Godfrey.

Scott's films always present fascinating views of the world, whether it be far-flung futures (Blade Runner) or the arenas of ancient Rome (Gladiator). Robin Hood is no different in this regard, presenting a view of medieval England that is rich and vivid. The film is paced and shot extremely well and left me wanting more.

My enjoyment was enhanced by Marc Streitenfeld's score and the songs by cast member Alan Doyle add a light-hearted touch to a rather serious film.

If you're looking for an adventurous escape to the past, see Robin Hood, it's well worth the price of admission.
