FEATURE FIEND: THE EXPENDABLES

Sylvester Stallone had quite a nice comeback going. He took on new installments of Rocky Balboa and Rambo respectively; both of which were completely awesome, and now he's released a tome to all the big action flicks of the 80's with The Expendables. This movie boasted both some of those stars with some newer stars like Jet Li, Jason Statham, and Steve Austin, who are definitely in that older vein. Was it good? Eh, it was OK, it had its moments, but overall there was something lacking for me. Which is a bit sad since I was so looking forward to it.

A team of mercs consisting of Stallone, Li, Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and Mickey Rourke take on Eric Roberts and Steve Austin in a small Central American dictatorship. Big fights and explosions ensue, and for the most part it delivers, although honestly, with this gathering, and what Stallone accomplished in Rambo I expected it to be even more over-the-top.

As far as the stars themselves, Lundgren and Austin were pretty fun, especially the former. Statham was decent, and the rest were OK. I'm not talking acting here, folks, but I'm rating them on their one-liners and overall scene chewing ability or bad-assery. Had everyone been on par with Lundgren this would've rocked harder. The cameo by Arnold and Bruce were fine, but we already saw this scene in trailers, a huuuuge mistake IMO. This would've had a lot more zing as a surprise. I'd love to see Arnold give us a proper farewell flick, btw.

In full disclosure, though, I think the theatre I saw this in was terrible. An old, beat-up place that should've given off the feel of a real grindhouse experience, but yet I was just freaked out by the possibility of bed bugs and overall grossness. Plus, the screen and sound sucked, so I almost felt like I watched a bootleg. That said, I'll leave this open-ended and say go ahead a give it a watch if you haven't, but my opinion needs a second viewing.
