Back in June I posted the trailer for Red here, thinking that it might be worth checking out. Four months later I got my chance to see it and I was not disappointed.
Bruce Willis heads a great cast of actors that you are unlikely to find in an action film (Helen Mirren, John Malcovich, Morgan Freeman and Mary-Louise Parker). Willis plays Frank Moses, a retired CIA operative who has been targeted for execution by someone high up in the government. Escaping an initial trap, he goes on the run recruiting other former operatives to aid him in his task of finding out why he's being attacked.
While the plot is serious, the script by Jon and Eric Hoeber, based on the comic by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, remains light-hearted and witty. Mirren and Malcovich in particular make the humor shine, while the action, directed by Robert Schwentke, is intense and well-paced.
Red far outshines the majority of the summer's "blockbusters". It's an enjoyable popcorn film which is worth getting to the theater for.
