FEATURE FIEND: HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1

If you're looking for the feel good movie of the fall, then Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is not for you. If you're looking for a film which will leave you with a sense of hope, then it's still not for you. Deathly Hallows is the 7th installment in the Harry Potter series, and while the series has gotten progressively darker this film is by far the bleakest of the bunch.

The film picks up with Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) in hiding as Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) makes a move to take over the magical world. Potter's steadfast friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) help him to try to take the offensive, while staying hidden from Voldemort's henchmen. The trio finds help along the way, but loses allies in the process and the film closes on a note that makes you wonder how things could possibly turn out well for Potter and his friends.

The film, clocking in at about 2 hours and 30 minutes, is paced well and directed credibly by David Yates, director of the previous two Potter films, though at times some of the action sequences occur too quickly, becoming difficult to follow. The film makes no real concessions to those who may have not seen the previous films, so if you're seeing a Potter movie for the first time, you will likely not have a clue who the characters are.

If you have seen previous Potter films, then this is an essential film in the series, building up to the final showdown between Harry and Voldemort in next year's Part 2. Let's just hope that the finale will be a little bit brighter.
