DVD FIEND: TRICK 'R TREAT

The greatest movie to ever get shelved?! Quite Possibly! However, Warner Premiere has given the flick a very good DVD debut, and since its release, the news of how good this horror movie has actually spread like wildfire. I, myself, had the chance to sit down, along with fellow Possessed Fiender Anthony Picone and our respective girlfriends, to watch this fantastic film recently, and I was giddy with the results.

Make no mistake, this is no ordinary horror movie. This is a well-thought, well-scripted, and tightly directed and edited take on the spirit of Halloween itself and it's affect on a small town somewhere in the US. Writer/director Michael Dougherty incorporated many Halloween type stories into his multi-layered script, then constructed it in a way that would have Quentin Tarantino spinning on his head. The film jumps around from hour to hour, back and forth, and so on, leaving clues and pieces to what will happen, and then satisfyingly giving each storyline a proper ending. It's not a style employed often, or ever, in the horror genre, and it was quite refreshing to see. The characters breathe a sort of comic book style life, not so odd as the scene transitions also use comic book style captions to explain the where in the night the next scene falls. This gave the whole production an EC Comic sort of feel.

The horror aspects are excellent here, too. You've got serial killers, demons, zombies, and all kinds of other mischievous creatures of the night. There's just enough blood and guts to satisfy the die-hards, but not so much to scare off the casual viewer, which made the movie more enjoyable in my opinion. Overall, there's just such a fun feel to the movie that, honestly, you don't even think you're watching a horror movie. You just think you're watching a good movie, and that's exactly what anyone can ask for. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
