Before I begin, a quick note on a movie that was supposed to be released last week, but for some reason failed to get out of the gate at Netflix. I'm speaking of the Japanese film 20th Century Boys: Chapter One. Originally Netflix had it on its release page, but when Tuesday came along it was back on my Saved list. I'm not 100% sure why this has happened, but I'll try to get to the bottom of it.
OK, back to this week, and a pretty short, but fully packed list. First off, we have one of the more buzzed movies of the year, District 9. *OK, um, so what's all the "9" movies about this year, huh? Coincidence or a much larger conspiracy? Whatever it may be, this movie looks like the best of the bunch. A Sci-Fi and political thriller all rolled into one. This film looks fantastic, with a visual style that takes you right into the action. A splendid marketing campaign gave this one a lot of juice over the summer, and I'm super looking forward to seeing it now.
Next-up, Mike Judge's latest: Extract. Judge has a good workman level approach to his films. This approach works on a number of levels, from feeding the Regular Joes to winking to the smarty pants. Extract looks to hearken back to Office Space, not that I've seen that movie (don't shoot me), but that's what it seems like comparing trailers. Good, fun cast in this one.
Next, an indie romantic comedy starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt called (500) Days of Summer. I love Deschanel, her acting and looks (with her HUGE eyes). She's just cool to me, and JGL has slowly formed into a decent actor. I'm interested.
If you want to go with a more mainstream romantic comedy, you've got All About Steve with Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper, and Thomas Haden Church. I have no expectations for this movie, but I like the cast. Hope this one becomes a Watch It Now.
On the documentary front you've got the latest from the director of An Inconvenient Truth, It Might Get Loud. This one profiles three guitarists at different stages of their careers: Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. They jam throughout, sounds good.
There are a few other possible interesting flicks including a film about mobsters on Staten Island called, wait for it...Staten Island, and a film about Harry Potter fanatics. If those two cross-pollinated, then you'd really be talking!
Oh, and also, not a movie, but Family Guy's take on the Empire Strikes Back is also out. YEEHA!
