FIENDISH RELEASES!

The Fiend's weekly highlights in theaters, DVD, and Netflix...

IN THEATERS THIS WEEK…

THE GREEN HORNET: Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet is a head scratcher, but I still like the looks of this flick. Could be a fun romp!

THE DILEMMA: Ron Howard directs Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, but sadly I don't know much about this film.

ONG BAK 3 (limited): More butt kicking from Thailand!

ON DVD THIS WEEK…

PIRANHA 3D: This looked like a ridiculous amount of fun, and from what I've heard it is. I mean it has gratuitous gore and nudity in 3D, it's hard to fail!

THE SOCIAL NETWORK: The David Fincher Facebook flick is a must watch.

On Netflix this week…1. The A-Team…2. Legend of the Guardians…3. Despicable Me…4. Cyrus… 5. The Other Guys…6. The Town

FIENDISH RELEASES!

IN THEATERS THIS WEEK…

SEASON OF THE WITCH: It sat on a shelf for quite awhile so who knows how good this will be, but Nic Cage and Ron Perlman's Crusades Horror looks pretty cool to me.

ON DVD THIS WEEK…

DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS: Steve Carrell and paul Rudd reteam for a plot involving coworkers coming to dinner with the biggest idiot they can find.

THE LAST EXORCISM: Is this like a mockumentary? I couldn't tell. Looked kinda scary, although I heard it wasn't all that.

MACHETE: Heck, yeah! I can't wait to see this! Oh, I have Netflix...move along.

On Netflix this week…Inception!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX'S RELEASES

Not too much going on this week, but there's a few worth noting:

First off we have MacGruber. The SNL skit starring Will Forte and Krtistin Wiig makes it to the big screen. I love the MacGyveresque skits, but can it hold up on screen? Possibly, the red-band trailers gave it a small glimmer of hope.

Next we have a direct-to-DVD sequel to 30 Days of Night, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days. I've read the source material, and the trailer to this one looks like it does it justice, but still, a direct-to-DVD always gives me slight pause.

This one is not for me, but The Human Centipede has caused a stir since it's release. I won't get into the gory details, but you can go ahead and look it up. I believe Ant even posted a trailer here at the Fiend.

Two others I'll mention: The Oxford Murders and The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. The former has Elijah Wood in the lead, and the latter is a pretty crazy looking western.

Happy renting!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX'S RELEASES

Nothing much this week except for two movies that had slipped under my radar.

The first is The Experiment. A thriller about a mock prison with ordinary folks as the guards and prisoners. Sounds cool, and it stars Adrien Brody and Forrest Whitaker, so how did this one slip? Not sure, but it's worth a rent.

The next is Ondine. This one's more of a fantastical movie with Colin Farrell and directed by Neil Jordan. It's about a fisherman that catches a girl in his nets, and she might be a sea-nymph. This one is not my personal cup of tea, but maybe it's yours?

That's it for this week, happy renting!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX'S RELEASES

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time: Video game/Disney thingee/CGI-heavy film with Jake Gyllnhaall that looked mildly entertaining. Here's Lou review.

Letters to Juliet: Amanda Seyfried is in two movies out this week, she's really jumped onto the scene, huh? Letters is the more popular one. Here's a link to the other, which sounds much better.

Blood into Wine: A doc about Maynard Keenan from Tool and his vineyard. No, fer real! I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

This week's big release is Date Night with Steve Carrell and Tina Fey. It had a nice 80's comedy feel to it, kind of reminding me of Adventures in Babysitting, but it came and went rather quickly.

Otherwise it seems like a pretty quiet week, probably because of the holiday. A few other releases with folks of note include Killers, Solitary Man, and The Joneses. Also, for you old Spaghetti Western buffs, Terence Hill is back in a western.

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

Only a few to mention this week...

First, Michael Caine takes care of business in Harry Brown.

Next, we have the interesting looking family movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Also, the prolific Tyler Perry's latest: Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?

And finally we have the sequel to the French comedy adventure flick OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies: OSS 117: Lost in Rio. I've yet to see the first one, but it's in my NFQ, and it did look good, so I'm curious about this spy-spoof series.

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

We have one big movie release this week, and a couple of little interesting ones.

First, there is Kick-Ass, movie I really wanted to see upon it's release, but just didn't get around to. Based on the comic created by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., it's the story of a teen who decides to become a costumed vigilante and the craziness and reality that comes with it. Helmed here by Matthew Vaughn it seems that he's played up the big action and comedic aspects of the book, and from what I've seen with great results. Move this one up to #1.

Next we have After.Life, a weird little film with Liam Neeson, Christina Ricci, and Justin Long, three actors I like. Ricci is dead, and Liam Neeson is a funeral director who can somehow help folks pass on to the afterlife. However, Ricci might not be dead after all. Dum, dum, dum!

Finally, we have Roman Polanski's political drama The Ghost Writer with Pierce Brosnan and Ewan MacGregor. I really have nothing on this one other than the who's.

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

Three interesting movies this week!

First up is Hot Tub Time Machine, which I can't wait to see! This time-travel comedy caper is a throw-back to all the wacky 80's comedies. With a fun cast headed by John Cusack and Craig Robinson, this movie has me written all over it!

Also releasing is the big Hong Kong martial arts flick, Ip Man. This is the story of the master who taught Bruce Lee, and boy does it look like it kicks ass!

Finally, we have Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which looked like a decent little flick.

That's about it, but here's the full listing. happy renting!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

The only film I'll talk about this week is The Runaways. A biopic about the all-girl punk rock group with Kristen Bell and Dakota Fanning in the lead roles. Two things I took from the trailers were that it seemed to be a thrill ride and that Miss Fanning is all grown up. I'll be giving this one a check!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

For me, this week's big release is The Book of Eli. I've always been a fan of Denzel Washington and the intensity he brings to his characters. I think The Hunt for Red October is where I became a fan, and have tried to see most of his flicks ever since. TBOE is one movie I really wanted to catch upon its release, but didn't have a chance to. This week it gets it's Netflix release, and it's a definite move to #1. As a post-apocalyptic action-thriller with a solid cast and really fun looking fight sequences, it has great possibilities, and a big-time return for the Hughes Bros. (Dead Presidents, From Hell).

Three other movies of interest this week are: Saint John of Las Vegas, The Bounty Hunter, and Chloe. I'm interested to see the quirky, indie comedy Saint John with Steve Buscemi in the title role, and Chloe looks kind of interesting, but The Bounty Hunter is kind generic looking. I wish Gerald Butler would stop taking these roles, and I raise a flag for anything with Jennifer Anniston.

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

Happy birthday, America!

This is yet another short release list, probably due to the holiday. There are only two flicks on this week's list that I'm interested in, and one other that I'll mention.

The first is Brooklyn's Finest. As a proud Brooklyn Original, I'm rather curious of how Antoine Fuqua handled our law enforcement officials. Fuqua's pretty solid in my book, so either way I'm sure he put together an entertaining flick especially with such a solid cast (Gere, Hawke, Snipes, Cheadle).

The other movie I'm interested in is a foreigner called Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. While I haven't seen a preview for it, I kept seeing the poster around Manhattan when it was given a limited release here. For some reason the image of the girl with the fireplace behind her was kind of haunting me. It sounds rather interesting as well.

Worth mentioning is A Single Man. Not my cup of tea, but Colin Firth was nominated for his starring role in it, so there's merit here.

That's it, get out there and enjoy some BBQ in honor of the USA! And then get out see some fireworks and join me for a midnight showing of Death Kappa at the IFC Center! Here's this week's complete list, happy renting!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

Two big horror movies are dropping this week. First The Crazies which looked pretty much as advertised. Timothy Olyphant headlines this remake of George Romero's original, and there's a dude that doesn't get enough credit, but is always entertaining. The other flick is also a remake, but one of one of the original horror movies: The Wolfman. Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins (this generation's Peter Cushing or Chris Lee) star. Looked rather classy. Here's Lou's review of it.

That's all I got for this week, but there are a couple of foreign flicks worth looking into and a comedy with Paul Giamatti that I haven't heard of. For the full list, click here. Happy renting!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX'S RELEASES

Not much this week to really talk about. We have the comedy She's Out Of My League and a couple of dramas I don't care about. (not a real drama guy) Here's the complete list. Happy renting!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

This isn't a big week, but there may be a flick or two to slap in the ol' queue. Let's take a looksee.

We start off with Invictus, a movie that garnered some award attention for its stars (Matt Damon, morgan Freeman) and director (Clint Eastwood). Some good names there, and who else could possibly play Mandela than the fantastic Mr. Freeman?! This goes on my queue for sure.

Next we have our ol' pal Michael Cera in Youth in Revolt. How do you not love this guy?! The dude makes me guffaw guffaw every single time. And there's two of him here! Clearly whoever wrote this is a genius. And I cannot wait for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I'm on line already for that one!

We then move to Unthinkable with Sam Jackson trying to stop terrorists. This one didn't seem to stick at the movies, but could worth a rent.

A couple other movies to mention: the Valentine's Day anthology for the ladies and a new Jim Jarmusch flick for the all the film snobs. I probably won't be seeing either, but maybe you might want to if you fit those categories.

That's about it. For the full listing click here. Happy renting!

THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

This week in DVD rentals include From Paris With Love with John Travlota hamming it up, which looks rather interesting, Mel Gibson getting back to basics with Edge of Darkness, and Leo doing his thing with Marty on Shutter Island. All three are definite adds for me.
