THIS WEEK'S NETFLIX RELEASES

Solid week this week for DVD rentals, so let's get right to it.

To start, a couple of movies I've seen are coming out this week. First, there's the Ricky Gervais comedy, The Invention of Lying, a movie that I rather liked despite it been very flawed. It's a fun movie about a world where no one has ever lied until Gervais gets into a pickle. After that, the world is his oyster. The second movie is Coco Before Chanel, a French film about the life of Coco Chanel before she became a fashion sensation. My review of that movie can be found here.

Onto a movie I'm really looking forward to seeing in Black Dynamite! I started seeing trailers to this one well over a year ago, and have been anticipating seeing it ever since. It's a brand new Blaxploitation film that looks completely over-the-top. It looks like all of the right elements are in place to make this a classic!

From there we go to a couple of action flicks that look interesting at the very least. Law Abiding Citizen, hate that name, stars Gerald Butler as a man pushed to the edge when his family is killed. It sounds like the Punisher, but it doesn't feel anything like that. Butler's character has an evil feel to him in the trailers, so I'll be curious to see how this one shakes out. Next we have Whiteout, a movie based on a graphic novel that I loved. This film was shelved for a long time, and when it did get released the reviews weren't favorable. Still, I look forward to seeing this Antarctic crime-thriller.

Other movies of possible interest include Chris Rock's documentary about African-American hair and hair salons, an indie comedy about Women in Trouble, a direct to DVD sequel to Eli Roth's Cabin Fever, and the second chapter of the Japaneses film series 20Th Century Boys (not that Netflix has ever resolved the disappearance of the first movie!).
