FEATURE FIEND: KICK-ASS

I have to admit that I was very skeptical about this film. I really enjoyed the comic book that this movie was based on and wasn't sure from the previews that it would be able to capture the feel of the book. While there are differences between Kick-Ass the movie and it's comic book predecessor, the movie exceeded my expectations.

Writer/director Matthew Vaughn, whose past work includes Stardust, does a good job with a very action-heavy piece. He doesn't water-down the comic's violence or gore for the film, at times to the point of making the audience uncomfortable. He does manage to lighten the mood with humor to relieve this discomfort.

Aaron Johnson delivers a solid performance in the title role but Chloe Grace Moretz completely steals the show as the foul-mouthed 11-year-old Hit Girl. The weak link in the cast is the most well-known actor in the film. Nicholas Cage's performance as Hit Girl's father Big Daddy, a former cop turned vigilante super-hero, seemed very wooden and unbelievable.

Some audiences will likely be repulsed by Moretz's character and if they are they will probably not enjoy this film at all. While I prefer the comic to the movie I would still recommend seeing Kick-Ass. It's definitely a fun tune-up for the blockbuster summer movie season.
