Wow, seeing pics from this movie makes me tingle. Everyone here at the Fiend Loves John Carpenter's The Thing, the filmmaker's take on Howard Hawks' classic sci-fi thriller The Thing from Another World (both of which are inspired by John Campbell Jr's short story Who Goes There?). Carpenter's version may be even more classic at this point, though. It is cinema that is crisp and relevant to this day with effects that are next to none. It is as bleak as its setting and will creep you out and unnerve you for days. So now that this prequel is in production pics have come out, and while they don't reveal much, the vibe is there. Maybe I'm just imagining this, who knows, but just the fact that this isn't yet another reboot and an actual prequel to Carpenter's film makes me dizzy with excitement. And anyone who has seen the 1982 movie knows exactly what is the outcome of this movie. That makes this venture even more fascinating. It's directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., who has previously directed music videos, and is a sort of protege of Zach Snyder. While that connection is at least a slight reason to breathe easier, it's tough to imagine this material in the hands of a first time guy.
This interview with Collider, though, alleviates me a bit. He seems to understand the material and how to approach it. So here's the pics, and lets hope for a teaser for the April film soon.
